Wolves at The Border Colin Brian Witz Federation Anthropological Station (Near the Cardassian Border) Chief Scientist's log: Begin Transmit to Vulcan Science Academy: Transmitting: Subject: Journals of Previous outpost crew, re: Disaster at Planet/Prime Directive Violations: Data Encoded......... Researcher's log: I have been sent to this frozen world to observe a reindustrialized species of erect, tool- using Canis Lupus-like life forms. After much consideration on species prejudice I decided to keep the previous survey designation's names, despite their anemographic and species chauvinistic qualities. The Species in question is now officially designated Lupus Sepias Fenris, or Fenari. The Planet is now referred to as Fenris IV, Planet: I-35S2479, or as the Cardassian's refer to it, Kulbrag-Nar. The Fenari are a warlike if not war-loving species. They continually fight between clans over territory, game, resources, and even mating. It is a wonder that they have achieved such advanced ship-building, weapons and animal husbandry technologies and still be so barbaric. Each clan is led by a Male and Female Alpha leader. The Females are in charge of hunting, and maintaining the villages. The Males are in charge of warfare. Which plays a central part in their culture. Armed with a standard issue Starfleet phaser I was able to obtain medical information on a Juvenile Male, without alerting the rest of the pack to my presence. I have also injected an Isolinear tag into the creature, so that I can observe it's future movements with minimum risk. Log 2 (One year later) My subject, whom I have nicknamed Mogli, has proceeded to advance through his clan's ranks and is considered one of the higher ranked members of the younger warriors. A month ago Mogli was allowed to lead a raiding party against another clan/pack. In the process of stealing a number of livestock, Mogli was able to capture the Female guarding them. After a ritual feast the Alpha Female of the Pack performed a marriage ceremony/ritual between Mogli and the captive, that ended with the Alpha male mating with the captive before returning her to Mogli's domicile. While the antiquated machinery that the Science Academy has seen fit to bestow on this poor human, has of course malfunctioned in these cold conditions, I have discovered near perfect genetic parallels between this species and the Terran Lupus Canis. This would indicate that the species was a result of the theorized 'Grandfather' race, responsible for seeding so many other Humans/Bipeds across the Galaxy. While my Colleagues on Vulcan may not believe in the Elder Species Theory, I believe I may now have proof of it's existence. I have decided to name Mogli's mate Hera, as she seems to be extremely temperamental. Log 3: Damn it! After two fucking years stuck in this frozen hell, I was about to kill something or maybe start a new war when disaster struck. A Cardassian ship entered orbit, and set up a mining camp in the territory of one of the major packs. As a result of the intrusions the pack attacked, killing all of the Cardassians on the ground. The warship then proceeded to open fire on random settlements, including the one where my research is being done. The village was totally destroyed, killing all of the Pack except for a war party lead by Mogli. Mogli and his troops did not attack another settlement, but rather camped out next to my observation blind. I think they have known of my presence for quite some time..... End Transmit: Part Two, Treason and Fenari ascendant forthcoming. Part 2 Transmission to Starfleet From Vulcan Science Academy ************************************************ Encoding Final Station/Anthropological Logs: Subject Fenari species and Fleet status. Observer's Log: The Cardassians have ceased orbital bombardment, and have began to beam down new survey teams. The Fenari pack I have been observing are camping just outside my safety enclosure. The Prime Directive would require me to transmit a request for evacuation, however I am unable to do this as the Cardassian Warship above me would simply intercept my transmission and blast me the hell off this frozen wasteland. I have spent the last five years studying these primitives and I have no intention of dying on this Iceberg. The Cardassian survey teams have been landing near The Sea of Loki (The waters there have a Heavy Deuterium Concentration, and are quite hazardous for the natives to travel on or in.) In silent 'Cloaked' observation I have discovered that hostilities between the Federation and the Cardassian Empire have resumed; over some spacial anomaly near Bajor of all places. It is with this in mind that I must cease my role as an observer and help begin the Fenari Counter offensive. Insurgent's Log: We are prepared for our first strike against the Cardassian Occupation, I have spent the past 3 months training Mogli and his followers in basic technology usage. They are fast learners despite their apparent lack of Civilization, I fear that if they are allowed to roam free they may become a threat to other species. Tonight we shall make our first strike against the Cardassians, with any luck I will be able to leave this planet and I can only hope that maybe the Maquis will have me. Insurgent's Log: As the Cardassian Warship supervised the loading of the high energy fuels it had to lower its shields. Not knowing the existance of this facility they did not expect me to beam 7 teams of 4-6 Fenari onboard their ship. I had to watch as they boarded the bridge, it was a sight that I will never forget but fervently wish I could. The Cardassian's were cut down by a heavy firearm that the Fenari call a Claw, it fired eight 7mm balls of light metal with a single discharge*. The roar was deafening and the amount of blood and body tissue that was destroyed by the weapon were unimaginable. The Fenari quickly dropped their spent firearms after a single blast and proceeded to engage the Cardassians in unarmed combat. The results were messy to say the least, the Fenari are stronger than humans, or Cardassians for that matter, perhaps on-par with the Klingons in physical strength. Their lack of modern weaponry put them at a considerable disadvantage when they seized the bridge, while they suffered heavy casualties taking the positions they did suceed in their missions. Partialy due to surprise, and partialy due to the shock and fury of their attacks. Exile's Log: I no longer hold any illusions of my position within Mowgli's society. After seizing the Cardassian Cruiser and tearing out the heart of the Captain, my subject proceeded with his demonstration of power. His first orders were for my confinement, I would be allowed to observe but nothing else. He then proceed to make raids against all of the other Fenari Clans using the ship's transporters. Proving his might by killing the other leaders, he then sacked the Cardassian Encampments. That was a week ago, now the ship has been traveling. Making trades with the Maquis and the Ferengi, Mowgli has purchased an unknown number of Klingon Warships** to augment the single Cardassian Cruiser. In his madness the warlord has taken to calling himself Alpha Lord Grendel - Ruler of all Fenris. He has taken over my science station as his palace and the female offspring of all of his former rivals are now his concubines. I am trapped on a Klingon Bird of Prey, enroute to a world full of Maquis sympathisers where I shall remain for the end of my days. End Logs ******************************** Tactical Summery: During the Dominion War, Starfleet sent one Akira-class ship to deal with the Prime Directive violation on Fenris Prime. This vessel was met by a force of five Klingon 'Birds of Prey' instead of the Damaged Cardassian Cruiser that was expected, the vessel was critically damaged and was forced to self-destruct to avoid capture. Further analysis indicates that the Fenari possess a small number of Former Klingon warships. This is augmented by their 'Treaty' with the Maquis, who were willing to exchange some defensive firepower in exchange for a 'legitimacy' that the Fenari despotism offered. We do not advise taking any action against the Fenari at this time as the expenditure of resources in proportion to gain would be illogical and wasteful. Naming of Vessels. The Fenari have been infected with human culture as a result of the actions of the late anthropologist who was assigned to /Observe/ them. The Fenari have shown a tendancy to name their vessels after characters from Nordic or Celtic mythologies. Examples: Their Orbital construction yards are known as the 'Sif' yards while their captured Cruiser/Flagship is called the 'Cu- Culain' Physical data: Fenari are physically stronger and more radiation resistant than most species in the galaxy. They stand over two meters in height and are equiped with very sharp teeth and claws. They are carnivorous, and have been known to eat other sentient species. They have a 6 month gestation period, after which they give birth to multipal offspring. Their cranial cavities are unremarkable, they do not possess active growth in the regions supporting telepathic instinct, but they do have more active sensory nodes. It should be noted that their sensory capabilities were sufficiant to enable them to detect the presence of Jem'Hadar*** Society: Barbaric, Poligimous, and Warlike, a textbook example of why we have a Prime Directive. Prefered Environment: Fenari are from a Cold: 15ºC, High gravity: 1.72Earth G, Oxygen/Nitrogen environment, they are likely to prefer a similar planet. End Vulcan Science Academy Log of Species: Fenari. Author's notes: *based on a 16th century boarding pistol called a 'Duck's Foot' Volley Gun, the effect is similar in usage and effect to a shotgun. The real-life Pirate "Blackbeard" was known to use them frequently. The present day Fenari forces do have standard energy weapons, but also carry semi-automatic shotguns. **The Fenari (Dominion War era) fleet consisted of a Single Cardassian Crusier (Cu-Culain); Five Birds of Prey(Magni, Modi, Morrigan, Wolfsark, & Talbat), and a D7 (Grendel). ***Presumed that the many other senses that the Fenari possess (Hearing, Smell, thermal etc). enabled them to detect the presence of the cloaked intruders. Not that it saved them from the weapons just that they knew where their enemies were. end of fanfic Have a nice day ;)
